Мне же представляется, что вопрос о том, могут ли предсознание и сознание существовать одновременно, уводит нас в философские дебри. Истинные ценители припомнят туманные, но важные идеи философа Джегвона Кима из Университета Брауна. Если я правильно понимаю: (а) предполагается, что сознательные ментальные состояния, будучи порождением лежащих в их основе физических параметров (то есть таких штуковин, как молекулы и нейроны), им не равны; (б) такая вещь, как поведение, не может быть вызвана как ментальным состоянием, так и лежащими в его основе физическими параметрами одновременно (это стало называться принципом казуального исключения Кима); (в) физические действия (например, нажатие кнопки или движение языка и гортани при отдаче генералам приказа начать войну) вызываются предшествующими физическими событиями. Таким образом, ментальные состояния не порождают поведения. Полагаю, это довольно интересно. Хотя, может быть, и нет, поскольку, с моей точки зрения, ментальные состояния и их физические/нейробиологические основания невозможно отделить друг от друга – это просто две разные концептуальные точки входа в рассмотрение одних и тех же процессов.
